American Independents

CHOKING MAN

How is American independent cinema doing? Is alive and kicking? And is it truly independent?

Norwegian Media Researchers and BIFF arrange a film seminar: It's been seventeen and twelve years since American independent broke commercially, first with SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE (1989) and then heavily with PULP FICTION (1994). Since then we've seen the independents and Hollywood overlap more and more.

British film researcher Geoff King has studied the emergence of the so called "Indiewood". On our opening night he meets film makers with experience from independents for a discussion about the current state of independent cinema. What is an indie picture today? How independent is it really? Under which conditions do independent film makers actually work? Which are the challenges and possibilities that have come with the digital revolution?
