Guiseppe Tornatore
It is a pleasure to announce that director Guiseppe Tornatore will be a guest at BIFF on October 26th
The filmmaker behind CINEMA PARADISO (1988), STANNO TUTTI BENE (1990) and UNA PURA FORMALITÀ (1994), Tornatore was given the honor of opening the film festival in Venice in September this year, and it is an honor for BIFF to host him during this 10-years anniversary festival.
His new film, BAARIA is a great epic that stretches 50 years where it tells the story of a poor family in Sicily. The story begins in the 1930s where the shepherd boy Cicco grows up in the shadow of facism in Italy. Tornatore shows how the Italian communist party became a significant political power in post-war Italy when Mussolini’s regime fell.
The rich allusions to filmmakers like Federico Fellini, Ettore Scola, Bernardo Bertolucci and Sergio Leone are accompanied by Italy’s greatest film composer Ennio Morricone’s beautiful and monumental music.
