A burlesque and bleak tragicomedy about growing up in sin in rural Belgium.
13-year old Gunther Strobbe lives together with his father and three of his drunken uncles with his grandmother, who has a heart bigger than her allowance. Can Gunther escape his destiny in this meaningless pit of self-destruction? Can he get away from the shittiness of things?
THE MISFORTUNATES is about a youth in a sinful environment and the possibility of getting out while still possible. The film is an intelligent and juicy tragicomedy which combines black humour with a serious theme through an impeccable film language.

31-year old Felix van Groeningen has studied at the film school in Gent, where he got his master’s degree with the short film 50 CC (2000). After having made some more short films, Van Groeningen directed and co-acted in some theatre pieces, before he returned to his big passion: movies. With his idiosyncratic talent he has made three movies so far, which all were successes both with the press and the public. His films are marked by a personal, easy recognisable style and a fascinating look on people in an untypic environment. Van Groeningen is one of the foremost elements of the Belgian Nouvelle Vague-movement.
