Nature vs culture

On an island in the Mergui archipelago outside Burma and Thailand, the young speardiver Hook, of the Moken sea-nomads, wonders what the future holds. Like his peers, Hook grew up as much below water as above it - after all he learned to swim before he could walk. The Moken sail Kabang boats made from a single tree, but now their way of life is disappearing. Hook is forced to meet the modern world and the challenges that come with it, but he wants to build a Kabang and save his slowly vanishing culture.

Meet directors Runar Jarle Wiik and Mette Cheung Munthe-Kaas at the screenings September 27. and September 28.
