This Filthy Earth

A raw, passionated and darkly humorous interpretation of Zola's classic "La Terre", where desperation and prejudice are festering in an isolated rural community. Shot largely on digital video, it's inventive, potent stuff, with the camera getting right into the action - be it pub drunkenness or calving. This intimacy also creates claustrophobia - there's no escape from this place, from this life of toil. With its source in Zola's 'La Terre', the themes are pure 19th Century: hardship, more hardship and ensuing bitterness - but with a Beckettian sense of angst and isolation. This is potent, highly imaginative storytelling.
