Everyone knows Jackie Chan as a Hong Kong action star. But who Jackie Chan really is, was something that even himself didn’t know until recently. He thought he was born in Hong Kong in 1954, as the only child of poor parents. His father was a cook, his mother a housemaid. In 1999, his mother’s health began to fail and his father decided to tell his son the whole family story: Jackie’s real father worked as a spy for the Nationalist Party and his mother was anything but a simple housemaid. And Jackie Chan had several siblings in China.

The film follows the traces of his family, whose fate is far from unique in China. Interspersed by historical documentary footage, this film does not merely tell the story of one family, rather, it tells the story of modern China.
