This adaptation of "Theatre", one of W. Somerset Maugham’s lesser known novellas, is a dazzling take on 1930s London West End. Annette Bening stars as Julia Lambert, an actress who always sees herself in the spotlight, whether on stage or not. Jeremy Irons plays her conceited husband who, being the owner of the theatre, has total control of her career. When she is cheated on by both her husband and her lover, Julia decides it's time to fight back.
István Szabó (b. 1938) studied at the academy of film art in Budapest, and went on to become one of Hungary's leading filmmakers. CONFIDENCE (1979) won the Silver bear at the Berlinale. Later films include COLONEL REDL (1985), DEAR EMMA, SWEET BÖBE (1992) and TAKING SIDES (2001).
