Richard Linklater (b. 1960) studied literature in college with aspirations of becoming a writer, but he soon developed a love for film. In 1985 he founded the Austin Film Society, and in 1991 he directed the low budget film SLACKER, claimed to be the beginning of the American independent film renaissance of the 1990s. Many of his films take place during one 24-hour period: DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993), BEFORE SUNRISE (1995), that was awarded Silver Bear in Berlin, and BEFORE SUNSET (2004), which was nominated for an academy award. In 2001 Linklater directed WAKING LIFE, using the rotoscoping technique for the first time. Linklater has also directed TAPE (2001), SCHOOL OF ROCK (2003) and FAST FOOD NATION (2006.) Despite his popularity, and the ability of doing high paying Hollywood films, he remains in Texas with his own studio.
