The Yacoubian Building

Omaret yakobean
Egypt / 2006 / 161 min
Marwan Hamed

With the adress «Yacoubian building», Suleiman Basha Street, as the only common factor, Egyptians from all classes and layers of society are tied together by similar intrigues and problems. In a seemingly secular society, people's practices and beliefs are put to the test daily. Religious differences and ancient prejudice still make life harder than need be. Skipping between the different plots, gradually letting us understand each character's mindset, this film is fascinating and eye-opening. Welcome to Modern Egypt 101.
