BALLAST opens with a suicide and moves on from there, burrowing ever deeper into the lives of the three people left behind. Filmed on location in the wide-open claustrophobic plains of the Mississippi Delta, the film's bleak themes are mirrored by equally bleak visuals.
BALLAST is a remarkably daring and assured debut film, with a disorienting and almost hypnotic quality that keeps the viewer firmly locked into its overlapping storylines. This is one of the most involving films of this year's festival.
