HUNGER is an odyssey in which the smallest gestures become epic. It tells the tale of men who realize that their body is the last resource for protest. Ten years after the Belfast-agreement and 27 years after the fatal hunger strikes in the infamous Maze prison, Steve McQueen's directorial debut is a valuable and balanced insight into the struggle of Bobby Sands and his peers, as they fight for a united Ireland and a status as political prisoners, as well as the struggle of the prison guards, who lived in fear and on a daily basis checked their cars for car bombs.
