Theatre director disappears into a life-sized play

Caton Cotard (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) is a theater director who has lost his mooring to life. He seeks to correct this by staging a play that will include his whole life, and builds a gigantic set that is a replica of New York. SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is acclaimed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's funny, absurd and melancholic directorial debut, where he fully displays his unique storytelling abilities.

Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman (b. 1958) is best known for his groundbreaking screenplays for directors like Spike Jonze with BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (1999) and Michel Gondry with ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004). SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is Kaufmans debut as a director.
