Darling! The Pieter-Dirk Uys Story
When Julian Shaw was 15 he saw a performance that would change his life. The man on stage was Pieter-Dirk Uys, a South African political satirist. In Sydney he held a glowing one man show where he railed against the South African aids politics with irresistible black humor and wits, calling it "the new apartheid" and holding the country's government responsible. After the performance Shaw approached Uys and asked if he could make a documentary about him. This is what came out of it.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1985, Julian Shaw has published a photographic novel, "Modern Odysseus", together with Colin Friels, and in 2002 he won the Australian Film Institute’s Critics’ Award for his film reviews. DARLING!, his directorial debut, has also won several awards. His second documentary, CUP OF DREAMS: A NATIONAL OBSESSION, is completed, and he is currently developing his first feature film.
