The Return of the War Room
This film revisits the people and themes of THE WAR ROOM (1993), Hegedus and Pennebaker's behind-the-scenes look at the hard-charging campaign staff behind Bill Clinton's run for President in 1992. Virtually all the major players from the original film are on hand to discuss the 1992 race and reflect on today's campaign strategies, including chief Clinton strategists James Carville and George Stephanopoulos; their colleagues Paul Begala, Bob Boorstin, Lisa Caputo, Rahm Emanuel, Stan Greenberg, Mandy Grunwald and Mickey Kantor; Republican campaign strategist Mary Matalin (now married to Carville); and journalist Mark Halperin.
D.A. Pennebaker & Chris Hegedus
D.A. PENNEBAKER and CHRIS HEGEDUS form one of the most respected and unique teams of documentary filmmakers working today. Known for their unobtrusive, fly-on-the-wall style of filmmaking, they do not direct, nor interview for information. Using handheld cameras and available light allows them to observe without interrupting. They prefer that the protagonist determine what will happen, not the filmmaker. The result is a candid portrait of real characters in action and confrontation.
The team received the D.W. Griffith Award for Best Documentary of the Year and an Academy Award nomination for their 1993 film THE WAR ROOM, which followed Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign. Their most recent film, co-directed by Nick Doob and produced for HBO, ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY, received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations including Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Program.
