The Good American
In THE GOOD AMERICAN we meet Tom Weise, the founder of such concepts as Rentboy.com and Hustlabal - quite possibly "the world's most hedonistic dance party". Veteran director Jochen Hick avoids the obvious trap of portraying Weise's world of male prostitution, gay pornography and more or less reputable escort services as some sort of modern-day freakshow. Rather, the focus is always firmly on the ordinary aspects of the Weise and his world. THE GOOD AMERICAN is a fascinating documentary about a lifestyle few of us will ever experience.
Writer, director and producer Jochen Hick (1960) was born in Darmstadt, but raised in Munich and has studied visual communication at the Art Academy in Hamburg. Since then, he has worked in film and TV as a director's assistant, cameraman and journalist. Hick directed several short films, among them MOON OVER PITTSBURGH (1985), before making his first documentary VIA APPIA in 1992. In 1994, he founded the production company Galeria Alaska Productions. After making SEX/LIFE IN L.A. (1998) about young men trying to make it in and around the gay porn scene in Los ANgeles, he has directed NOONE SLEEPS (2000) and TALK STRAIGHT: THE LIFE OF RURAL QUEERS (2003, screened at BIFF in 2003). In 2004 BIFF screened his CYCLES OF PORN: SEX/LIFE IN L.A. PART 2, where Hick sought out the subjects of the original documentary to see what had happened in the eight years in between. In 2008 he directed EAST/WEST - SEX & POLITICS a documentary about the attempts to arrange a Pride-parade in Moscow.
