Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES is a film that is hard to pin down. With a narrative that never seems to move in any predictable direction, this tale of the titular uncle Boonmee takes us on a journey into a state of mind which few of us have ever experienced. Being able to journey through his previous incarnations through the aid of the ghosts and spirits who reside in the forest outside his home, Boonmee examines his past lives, as well as taking stock of the one which is now coming to an end.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul is one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have worked outside the strict studio system. He experiments with dramatic plot structure of Thai television and radio programs, comics and old films. With images of small towns, non-professional actors and improvised dialogue, he challenges the boundaries between documentary and fiction. His first feature, DOKFA NAI MEUMAN (2000), was an enormously successful documentary. Later, especially BLISSFULLY YOURS (2002) and TROPICAL MALADY (2004) have had massive success, given him lots of awards and made him an international household name.
