In 2010, after ten years and five critically acclaimed albums, The National are finally experiencing their big break. Before their biggest tour to date, lead singer Matt Berninger invites his younger brother Tom to join them as tour manager. Tom, a film school dropout and heavy metal fan, decides to bring a camera and a document life on the road. It turns out, however, that Tom is neither particularly well suited for the job as tour manager nor documentary filmmaker. MISTAKEN FOR STANGERS is a firework display of meta filmmaking, sibling rivalry and music.

MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS (2013) is TOM BERNINGER's debut. Berninger, born in Cincinnati, Ohio has never previously finished a movie. That is, if one doesn't count his home made slasher about a murderous rampage-prone barbarian with an identity crisis.
