Internal and external exile

Lars Hertervig (1830-1902) is known as the talented painter who lost his mind. There is no doubt that he lived a hard life, but was he truly insane? We follow Hertervig from his Quaker background, through his obsessive and unsuccessful love story in Germany to his return to Stavanger and a life of psychiatric diagnoses, institutionalization and public humiliation. Double bill: LYSLEITE, a Norwegian short film directed by Tor Sivertstøl (33 min), will be screened before LIGHT OF MADNESS.
