In Stephen Frears PHILOMENA, Judi Dench plays the role of Philomena Lee, an ageing Irish woman searching for the son who the Catholic church made her give up for adoption. She is aided in her quest by Martin Sixsmith, a journalist who has recently been made redundant and who sees Lee’s gripping story as a mean to get back into the game. At first glance Judi Dench and Steve Coogan might seem like an odd pairing, but as it is, their uniquely warm and witty on-screen chemistry is what makes PHILOMENA such a compelling experience.
