Mundial: The Highest Stakes
In 1982, Poland was a grim place. In March of '81 the communist regime had declared martial law in an attempt to crush the political opposition. Curfews were installed, soldiers patrolled the streets and people who were known or even suspected to be critical of the regime were detained and, in some cases, murdered. In the midst of this, the Polish people saw one glimmer of hope and optimism - namely the men's national football team who were exceeding everyone's expectations in the World Cup in Spain.
