Macondo is a small community of Chechen refugees and asylum seekers outside of Vienna. Its values, traditions and language are all strictly Chechen and the Austrian authorities' encouragements to assimilate are firmly resisted. It is here that we meet Ramasan, who at the age of eleven can be considered man of the house according to Chechen tradition. In Austria, however, he is considered a child. With her first feature, documentary filmmaker Sudabeh Mortezai tells the moving story of a young boy torn between two worlds, all the while living in the shadow of a father he can barely remember.
Meet director Sudabeh Mortezai at all screenings during the festival.
