Black Coal, Thin Ice
When dismembered body parts start showing up on the conveyor belt of a coal factory in northern China, it doesn't take long before detective Zhang is on the trail of the murderer. But when what should be a routine arrest goes horribly wrong, it sets the stage for what will be Zhang's life-long obsession. Five years later the now disgraced and drunk former policeman picks up the trail anew. And all tracks lead back to a mysterious woman … With its captivating film noir tropes and unglamorous lens of social realism, the winner of this year's Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival is easily one of the year's greatest crime dramas.
