Structured much like a classic sports drama, Sacha Wolff's MERCENARY defies convention by its choice of sports – rugby – its setting – New Caledonia and France – and its stakes: For as he takes on both French xenophobia and the authoritarian patriarchal culture of his homeland, twenty-something Polynesian protagonist Soane has little to win and all the more to lose. Mixing traditional Hollywood tropes with a gritty kitchen sink sensibility, Wolff's debut feature marks him out as a director to watch.
