The Magnitsky Act – Behind the Scenes
THE MAGNITSKY ACT caused considerable controversy earlier in the year when screenings were cancelled. The point of contention is the case of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in jail in 2009 after having been arrested for accusing the Russian police of tax fraud. The official Western account of the story says Magnitsky was tortured and murdered but director Andrei Nekrasov claims to have proof that he died due to a lack of medical attention and that his accusations were actually an attempt to cover one of his own clients.
