Surrounded by flowing rivers of fabric and cement-clad machines, we move silently between the workers in a big textile factory in the industrialized state of Gujarat in western India. In Rahul Jain's documentary MACHINES, the factory itself dictates the mood and rhythm of the film with its sharp fluorescent lamps and buzzing from the countless machines. Brief interviews with the workers serve as our only guide to this raw portrait of everyday life in the factory, in which the moral corruption that lies at the heart of Western prosperity slowly comes into focus.
