With his elegant drawings of muscular men in tight-fitting clothes and provocative poses, Touko Valio Laaksonen (1920–1991) AKA Tom of Finland became an icon of the gay scene early on. And as LGBTQ culture flowed into the mainstream, he became one of those artists whose work “everybody” knows but who few know anything about. With the stylish biopic TOM OF FINLAND Dome Karukoski sets out to tell the story of Laaksonen’s life, with special focus on the experiences that informed – and sprung out of – his career as an artist.
