MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE tells the story of the relationship between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian girlfriend Marianne Ihlen, which inspired the song “So Long, Marianne”. This account of the events is world famous, but director Nick Broomfield – who himself had an affair with Ihlen around this time – serves up a series of different perspectives which paint a picture that is both more complex and less romantic than the popular love song. Featuring evocative archival footage and candid interviews, this is a personal film about the truth behind the poetry.
