Shortly before being arrested by police, a thief buries a bag full of money on a hill in the desert. Returning after his stint in prison, he discovers that there is now a shrine to an unknown saint placed on the spot where he buried his treasure and a thriving village next to it, catering to the pilgrims seeking the saint’s healing powers. Featuring stunning painterly images, subtle, slow-burning humour and a poignant fable about religion, greed and the troubles of tourism, THE UNKNOWN SAINT is a remarkable debut from Moroccan director Alaa Eddine Aljem.
