The Armstrong Lie
In 2009, renowned documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney was hired to direct what he presumed would be an inspiring comeback film about the man who at the time was widely regarded as his generation's greatest cyclist. Both Lance Armstrong and his team gave Gibney unprecedented access, and as a result the director was able to record hour upon hour of seemingly candid conversations. When Armstrong in 2013 went on Oprah and admitted that the charges of doping were true, Gibney realized he could retool his footage into something far more compelling than a puff-piece.
ALEX GIBNEY (1953) has directed and produced numerous films for over 30 years. His film TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE was the winner of the 2007 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
