HARMONY LESSONS is a spectacularly assured debut feature by Kazakh director Emir Baigazin. Through the use of sparse and static imagery, he infuses the tale of 13 year old Aslan's struggle with school bully Bolat with a hypnotic rhythm and a sense of calm which is both poetic and unsettling. As the thuggish Bolat makes Aslan an outcast among his peers, the highly intelligent and emotionally distant young man goes about planning his revenge with the utmost methodical precision.
Born in Kazakhstan, EMIR BAIGAZIN was a theatre actor in Aktobe before studying film and television directing. His first feature-length drama, HARMONY LESSONS, premiered in competition at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.
