The place is Poland and the date is December 1945. As the Poles struggle to rebuild their country after the German capitulation, French Red Cross doctor Mathilde does her best to help. One day she is approached by a nun who begs her to come back to the convent to help her ailing sisters and when she arrives, Mathilde discovers no less than seven pregnant nuns. The pregnancies are a result of the nuns having been raped by Soviet forces but in order to not jeopardize the church’s standing in society, the mother superior is adamant that they be kept a secret.
