In the wake of Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014, a group of Ukrainian rebels proclaimed the somewhat shaky state called The People's Republic of Donetsk. In DIY COUNTRY we witness their struggle as they realize that state-building is not as easy as it seems. Starting out with fresh hope and a somewhat naive optimism, disillusionment and infighting soon sets in, with director Antony Butts on hand to document the internal conflicts and power struggles. The resulting film is a surrealist fable about the people behind the headlines.
