Even though the Gaza Strip is constantly in the news, the stories being told are usually stories of suffering and tragedy rather than stories about people. With SAMOUNI ROAD Stefano Savona seeks to rectify this by giving us a multifaceted portrayal of a family one year after Israeli armed forces killed 29 men, women and children in their neighbourhood. Combining interviews, reconstructed drone footage and dreamlike animated sequences, the documentary conveys the humanity of the people of Gaza in a way that makes their lives relatable on a deeply personal level.
SAMOUNI ROAD is in our main competition programme for international documentaries, Documentaire Extraordinaire and in the competition programme for human rights documentaries, Checkpoints.
