In order to get the visa she needs to realize her dream of becoming a house DJ in Chicago, Evelina needs to prove that she has a steady job. In the Minsk of 1996, however, jobs are hard to come by and when she makes an error in her forged application, she is forced to ingratiate herself with a strange family in a backwater town in order to stop them from blowing her cover. Far more than a comedy of bad Slavic manners, CRYSTAL SWAN’s tale of belonging, migration and the American dream captures the zeitgeist of today while still channeling the full force of the post-Soviet Belarus blues.
CRYSTAL SWAN is in our main competition programme for international fiction, Cinema Extraordinaire.
