According to Moroccan law, extramarital sex is a crime that can be punished with up to one year in prison. For 20-year-old Sofia, who lives with her parents in Casablanca, this has serious implications: One day, she is struck by severe stomach pains and finally forced to realize that she is not only pregnant but actually going into labour. SOFIA is a multifaceted character study with an increasing complexity which is told with impressive efficiency – a feat for which it deservedly won the award for Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Festival.
SOFIA is in our main competition programme for international fiction, Cinema Extraordinaire.
Meryem Benm'Barek-Aloïsi (Marocco) SOFIA is Benm'Barek-Aloïsi’s first feature film.
