Ayka has just given birth, but instead of taking care of her baby she escapes out into the cold winter streets of Moscow to return to her job in a chicken factory. But when the corrupt factory manager disappears, she is forced to try to make ends meet in the seedy underbelly of the Russian capital. Sergey Dvortsevoy’s social realist gut punch AYKA is both a suspenseful drama and an acting tour de force, for which Samal Yeslyamova deservedly won the award for best actress at Cannes earlier this year.
AYKA has won the Cinema Extraordinaire Award, our main competition programme for international fiction.
