What’s happening?!? This is the question that echoes through Sergey Loznitsa’s new film. DONBASS is no ordinary war movie, even though the Ukranian director portrays the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Through its 13 loosely connected segments, the films paints a frighteningly realistic picture of society collapsing as war breaks out – as seen from the point of view of powerless civilians. Tackling fake news, nationalism and the savagery of man, the film proceeds like a Roy Andersson film with the warmth and the quirky humour replaced by a brutal and disturbing surrealism.
