Having come to the US on a work visa, Romanian nurse Mara is desperate to secure a residence permit for herself and her eight year old son. Thus, she has married a former patient, but being married to an American is only a step on the way to obtaining a green card. As she attempts to navigate the cynical and scrupulous immigration bureaucracy, she quickly realizes that the system is set up to prey on the weak and the needy. Based on director Ioana Uricaru’s own experiences, LEMONADE is a scathing condemnation of institutional corruption and chauvinism that captures the zeitgeist of Trump’s America.
