Iranian refugee Esmail has an apartment and a job at a moving company. His only problem is that in order to stay in Denmark, he needs a residence permit – and in order to get that, he needs a girlfriend. Armed with a sharp suit and a well-kempt beard, he trawls the singles bars of Copenhagen looking for love, but time is running out. With his debut feature, Milad Alami delivers a remarkably mature tale of uncertainty, desperation and longing – not to mention a very interesting perspective on Denmark. THE CHARMER combines the best of Danish and Iranian film.
