This year’s winner of the Cannes Jury Prize is a refreshing and entertaining Brazilian mash-up of Spaghetti Western and dystopian science fiction. A few years into the future, Bacurau is a village with wonderful characters fighting back against an authoritarian regime and a group of mercenaries led by the ever watchable Udo Kier. The final confrontation is looming on the horizon. BACURAU pays homage to the rebels of Brazilian history and cinema, combining stylish, quirky action with a cry of defiance against the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
