ASTRUP – CATCHING THE FLAME is the life story of Nikolai Astrup (1880–1928), one of Norway’s greatest and most original painters. Growing up in a strict religious community, Astrup broke with his priest father at a young age and escaped to the continent to immerse himself in the world of art. Returning to his native Jølster, he frequently clashed with the small-minded locals while leaving behind a unique artistic legacy which many consider to be on par with that of the considerably more famous Edvard Munch.
