A fearless filmmaker, mother and mentor

Merata Mita was the first indigenous woman in New Zealand to write and direct a narrative feature film. In this intimate documentary portrait, her youngest son Heperi focuses on the barriers Merata broke in terms of race, class and gender. Blending archival footage, interviews with her other children and the filmmakers she influenced (such as Taika Waititi), MERATA: HOW MUM DECOLONIZED THE SCREEN is an in-depth and inspirational documentary about a cinematic pioneer, the importance of representation and the lasting effects of colonialism.
