The story of the military fiasco that changed the course of history

On April 24th 1980, the US launched a rescue operation to retrieve 52 American hostages who were being held in the American embassy in Tehran. The mission was a spectacular failure which accomplished nothing and cost the lives of eight American soldiers. In the thorough and expansive DESERT ONE, veteran filmmaker Barbara Kopple interviews Iranian eyewitnesses as well as American hostages, soldiers, journalists and officials such as Jimmy Carter about this very public fiasco which changed the relationship between the US and Iran forever.
