China’s rapid economic growth has been accompanied by images of cities bathed in impenetrable poisonous fog. Now the authorities want change, and in this balanced and sharply-observed documentary, we follow environmental inspector Li who’s been given three months to improve the air quality in the city of Langfang. Displaying the advantages of a one-party state, SMOG TOWN shows what it takes to reduce pollution in a meaningful way, while at the same time painting a fascinating portrait of China’s economic and political system.
This film can be streamed on BIFF+ 14–31 October 2020.
