A visually stunning and shockingly grim journey through 1940s Eastern Europe

When his aunt dies and her house burns down, a young boy sets out on a nightmarish journey through Eastern Europe in search of his parents. Encountering one horror after another from witches, pedophiles and nazis (to mention but a few), the boy slowly makes his way westwards in the direction of the greatest horror of all – World War II. Visually stunning, shockingly grim and featuring the talents of Udo Kier, Stellan Skarsgård and Harvey Keitel, THE PAINTED BIRD is an existentialist (anti-)war movie in the vein of Elem Klimov’s COME AND SEE.
