In UPPERCASE PRINT documentary theatre and Romanian 80s television are juxtaposed to reveal the authoritarian strategies of Nicolae Ceauşescu’s dictatorship. Centering on the story of political activist Mugur Calinescu, who in 1981 scribbled a series of anti-government slogans in the city of Botosani, the film examines the interplay between state-owned television and the infamous secret police Securitate. Once again turning his eye towards Romanian history, Radu Jude presents a haunting Brechtian critique of authoritarianism.
